Superintendent's Message

July 20, 2020

Dear Madison Families,

We know many of you are wondering what this new school year is going to look like. We would like to provide you with an update on what we know right now. We want you to understand that the safety and well-being of our students and our staff is our top priority.  We understand that not knowing exact details is frustrating; however, we are working diligently to ensure we are ready for our students this fall.

We have moved our balanced calendar start dates to align with the majority of Oakland County, and we will start after Labor Day on Tuesday, September 8, 2020. As the state of Michigan is currently in Phase 4 of the Governor’s MI Safe Start Plan, we plan to offer families two options—In-Person or Virtual.

With the first option, we are planning for full in-person learning five days a week, with specific processes, procedures, and strict guidelines in place set by the Governor’s 2020-2021 Return to School Roadmap, including physical spacing, face coverings, and health and hygiene precautions.

A second option will be a full virtual experience. This virtual option will allow our High School students to continue with programs offered at the Oakland Technical campuses. We have secured a brand new virtual platform and learning will be vastly different than it was during the spring.  We are far more prepared to support our students’ learning and social/emotional needs with new curriculum and device support.  We will also have brand new Chromebooks for our students in grades 9-12 this fall, ready to deploy on day one.

Both learning options, In-Person and Virtual, will be led by our Madison highly qualified teachers and will meet rigorous content standards and state benchmarks outlined by the Common Core.

Below you will find links to a survey that will allow you to choose which learning option is best for your family. The first option is for full in-person learning, and the second option is full virtual learning.  Please keep in mind that this selection will be for one entire semester for the upcoming academic school year. We ask that you complete a survey for each of your students in the district. (Please note: There is a separate survey for each of our schools.) Your answers to this survey will allow the district to make some preliminary decisions in class rostering and spacing. We will send out another survey later in the summer that will allow you to lock in your decision for Fall 2020. (Please note: Should the Governor move the state or region back to Phase 3 of the MI Safe Start Plan, all students and teachers will move to a fully virtual option from home.)
